Back to his roots

MONTREAL – 51 is the new 58.

After sporting No.58 for his first 54 games with the Canadiens, David Desharnais has decided to make a change. When Bell Centre PA announcer Michel Lacroix announces the speedy center next season, he’ll now be starting with “Number 51…”

David Desharnais unveils his new number
“I wore No.15 as a kid until I started playing pro,” explained Desharnais, who recently signed a two-year deal with the Canadiens. “That was taken [with the Bulldogs] so I went with No.51. I’m pretty happy to have a number that really feels like mine.”

Having worn No. 15 with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens before switching to No.51 with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League and then the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, Desharnais is looking for some similar success in those digits in the big leagues.

“The same thing happened in Hamilton. My first year there I didn’t know if I was even going to make the team so when they gave me No. 36, I thought that was great,” he recalled. “The next year, I got my No.51 back. Everything is going according to plan, I guess.”
