Hey everyone. Recently, I was able to get home and spend some time with some family and friends and enjoy a good change of scenery.
Fun Minnesota fact: Every year MN holds the Outdoor Pond Hockey Championship.
That's right you heard it -- old-school pond hockey! In January, on Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, they hold a tournament to decide who is the best of the best out on the pond.
Last year there were 222 teams that played over 900 games in three days on 25 rinks! It's a pretty cool event for hockey players of all ages. There are four divisions, so there are teams for everyone. If you think you have what it takes to brave the cold and beat out over 222 teams next year, I invite you to register and come on out to Minnesota next January.
Oh, and just one more thing. When I said, "brave the cold" earlier I was very serious -- the temperature during this year's tournament was -24 degrees! Here is the link
to check it out! Back to the theater
With some extra time on my hands I've also been able to see a few movies in the theaters and take in a few rentals. Let's start with Charlie Wilson's War
.Charlie Wilson's War
Starring: Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams, more cast
Directed By: Mike Nichols & Elaine May
Release Date: 12/21/2007
Run Time: 97 min.
Here's the rundown: Tom Hanks, a bachelor congressman from Texas, was known as having a little too much fun for his chosen profession and was mentioned as being seen at times partying in Las Vegas amongst other interesting pastimes.
Known as “Good Time Charlie,” his nickname was simply not fair.
And it was not until months after his extraordinary work to help Afghanistan in their efforts to fight off constant Russian invasions, that Charlie got the recognition he deserved. With little help from his friends and only through his courage, persistence, and passion to do the right thing for others, he was able to put extraordinary ideas into action.
Charlie's partners included: Gusta Avrakotos, a blue-collar operative, who was a man willing to go to extraordinary measures to get things done. Joanne Herring, one of the wealthiest women in Texas, who was extremely religious and a well-known anti-communist. Together, these three worked hand-in-hand traveling around the world forming alliances and working with lawmakers, arms dealers, and now and then, the ever-important belly dancer!
As you can tell, this movie was very entertaining and presented a great story to show what just a few people can achieve when they share a goal.
It's obviously not a movie for kids, but I would recommend it to any adult. I mean, how can you go wrong with Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts in a movie? So go check it out! I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
A second movie I saw a little bit ago was one of my favorites and I think it might be one of yours, too. National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Justin Bertha, Diane Kruger, Ed Harris, more cast
Directed By: Jon Turteltaub
Released By: Walt Disney Pictures
Release Date: 12/21/2007
Run Time: 124 min.
Genre: Action and Adventure
Rating: PGNational Treasure: Book of Secrets
is a movie for all ages. By the way, in case you don't remember, National Treasure: Book of Secrets
is the Sequel to the 2004 blockbuster simply named National Treasure
. If you saw the first one, I have no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy this one just as much, if not more.
In Book of Secrets
, Nicolas Cage's character (Ben Gates) learns of newly discovered evidence implicating his family name and great-great-grandfather in the assassination of president Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth.
The discovery of the authentic page from Booth's diary jumpstarts Gates and he takes immediate action and begins to search for 18 other missing pages.
This movie, packed with great, award-winning actors, is truly a joyride and a thrill to see. There are more discoveries, clues, and treasures found in this sequel that keep you entertained the whole time! So get out there and see it while it's still in theaters!I give it two thumbs up and a 4 out of 5 stars!Back to the video store
And last but not least... if you're not a theater person and enjoy watching a good movie on your couch, I have a couple good rentals for you.
The Bourne Ultimatum
: If you liked the first two then you will love the third. I thought the first two were "okay to good," but this one just blew me away. It has much more of all the good stuff: action, fights, car chases and, of course, high-powered espionage!
And finally, if you are into horror movies then you have to keep up with the "Saw" collection and Saw 4
was just recently released. It's a little different from the first three and has a little more story telling and background information on why "Jigsaw" is doing what he does. It's another good movie to check out if you're into that sort of thing, and it is definitely not for kids. That's all I got for now. Hope you enjoy the flicks and I will have another review really soon. Thanks for all the well wishes and nice thoughts and Go Bruins! Albe
