Micky Ward to Drop First Puck on Friday

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins
BOSTON, MA – “Irish” Micky Ward, the decorated boxer from Lowell, MA who the Academy Award®-nominated film “The Fighter” is based on, will drop the ceremonial puck before the Bruins/Red Wings game on Friday February 11 at the TD Garden in Boston (7:00 p.m., TV: NESN, RADIO: 98.5 The Sports Hub). Ward will be available to the media at 6:15 p.m. in the locker room hallway of the TD Garden and also join NESN during their second intermission report.

Ward won three New England Golden Gloves titles as an amateur before turning pro in 1985. He started off 14-0 in his professional career and retired with a 38-13 pro record, having captured both the WBU Intercontinental Light Welterweight title and the WBU Light Welterweight title. He was involved in Ring Magazine’s “Fight of the Year” three consecutive years from 2001-03 for his bouts with Emanuel Burton (2001), Arturo Gatti (2002) and Arturo Gatti again in 2003. His first battle with Gatti has been hailed by many boxing fans and experts as the “Fight of the Century” and Round 9 of that fight has been labeled the “Round of the Century.”

Starring Mark Wahlberg as Ward and directed by Academy Award® nominee David O. Russell (Three Kings), THE FIGHTER has received seven Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo and Amy Adams), Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.  The Fighter will be released on two-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack with Digital Copy, on standard DVD and on VOD March 15, 2011 from Paramount Home Entertainment.
