Kessel, Thomas Added to Team USA

Colorado Springs, CO – Forward Phil Kessel (Madison, Wis./Boston Bruins) and goaltender Tim Thomas (Flint, Mich./Boston Bruins) have been added to the roster of the U.S. Men’s National Team that will compete at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship, USA Hockey announced today.

Kessel, who played in all 82 regular-season games and recorded 37 points (19-18) for the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins in 2007-08, joins the U.S. Men’s National Team for the third time, while Thomas, the Bruins’ starting goaltender and a 2008 NHL All-Star Game selection, will make his sixth appearance with Team USA.

Kessel has represented the United States in international competition on six previous occasions and is USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program’s all-time leading scorer with 104 goals and 180 points. He earned the gold and silver medals with the U.S. National Under-18 Team at the IIHF World Under-18 Championships in 2005 and 2004, respectively. Kessel is also a two-time member of both the U.S. National Junior Team (2005-06) and U.S. Men’s National Team (2006-07).

Thomas has worn the colors of Team USA at five previous IIHF Men’s World Championships (1995-96, 1998-99, 2005). He backstopped the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2007-08 with 28 wins and career-bests in goals-against average (2.44), save percentage (.921) and shutouts (3).

USA Hockey also announced today that forward Nathan Gerbe (Oxford, Mich./Boston College) and defenseman Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y./Boston University) have been invited to the U.S. Men’s National Team training camp in Portland, Maine. The two will train with Team USA (April 24-30) and will compete in the pre-tournament game against Sweden on Sunday (April 27) at the Cumberland County Civic Center at 7 p.m. (EDT). Both players were 2008 RBK First Team East All-America selections.

The U.S. Men’s National Team will compete at the 2008 IIHF World Championship in Quebec City, Quebec, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 2-18.

NOTES: Team USA will conduct its training camp beginning tomorrow (April 24) through April 30 in Portland and Falmouth, Maine, including a pre-tournament game against Sweden on Sunday (April 27) at 7 p.m. (EDT) at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Mike Sullivan, assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Kurt Kleinendorst, head coach of the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League, will serve as assistant coaches for Team USA … All 56 games from the 2008 IIHF Men's World Championship will be broadcast live on … The 2008 U.S. Men's National Team is under the direction of Jim Johannson and a four-member advisory group, including NHL general managers Brian Burke (Anahiem), David Poile (Nashville), Ray Shero (Pittsburgh) and Don Waddell (Atlanta).
