Julien Talks Kampfer, Islanders

by John Bishop / Boston Bruins
BOSTON -- After today's optional skate, Boston Bruins Head Coach talked about the addition of defenseman Steven Kampfer to his locker room.

"He’s a good puck moving defenseman," said Julien. "I think that’s one of his qualities.

"He shoots the puck well. I think he sees the ice well, so I think that’s what we saw in the preseason and that’s what we liked about him."

But at the moment, Julien doesn't necessarily know what role Kampfer will play for the Black & Gold.

"I don’t’ think it’s scripted," said Julien. "I don’t think you can really script a game.

"He went down and got some experience with the American League team. He’s still moving the puck well as you can see with his stats, he’s producing. He’s a plus player and he’s had a good start to the year, so it merits being called up, and we liked him.

"Even thought it was between him and [Matt] Bartkowski when we had to cut down to one [on who to bring to European preseason trip], you could have flipped a coin on that one, no if’s or but’s.

"And again, that’s how much we thought of [Steven] Kampfer. We liked his mobility and his vision and so hopefully we’ll just allow him to go out there and show that tonight. He’s got to continue to do the things that made him successful throughout his career and what’s made him successful in Providence should help him be successful here too."

And Julien expects a tough game tonight versus the Islanders -- no if's or but's.

"I see a team that’s in every game that they play," said Julien. "You hear me say that and sometimes it sounds like coach's trying to blow smoke here, but I really believe that they’re a hard working, strong team that is in every game, and right now it’s up to us to be ready to play a team that’s got good goaltending, great speed, good work ethic.

"That’s what this game is about nowadays," continued Julien. "It’s not about first place teams playing last place teams or whatever.

"It’s about that gap between the two isn’t that big and they’re a team that’s just looking for a way to win some hockey games.

"We shouldn’t and will not take them lightly," he said.
