Chara Remains Focused on the Present

by John Bishop / Boston Bruins
BOSTON, MA -- After morning skate, Boston Bruins Head Coach was asked about the somewhat "quiet" atmosphere on the rink.

"Our guys this morning were focused," said Julien. "I think they are excited and hopefully they’ll show that once the puck is dropped tonight.

"We’re a serious group today," added the B's bench boss. "I didn’t find them tight or tense I just found them ready."

B's captain Zdeno Chara is generally pretty serious, but even he sounded excited as he talked about returning to playoff ice - particularly in TD Garden.

"It’s going to be great," said Chara of the atmosphere in the Bruins home arena. "We saw it last year, so I’m very excited for that."

But after that initial forray onto the rink, Chara will be charged with reigning in some pretty amazing talent.

"I think it’s just my job to play against top lines and top players," said Chara. "So I know I have to take care of that part of the game.

"We don’t know exactly what the line’s are going to be like," said the defensemen in reference to skaters like Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. "Again, we’ll see and we’re going to react to it.

"I mean, as of the game plan, I don’t think it’s going to change based on how they shuffle their lines."

Despite a 1-2-1 record during the regular season, the B's game plan, one which always requires defensive responsibility, seems suited to take on the Caps attack, but Chara didn't think that Boston's second seeded status meant they could take Washington lightly -- quite the contrary, actually.

"I don’t know if they can certainly call themselves underdogs but to me, it’s just everybody at this time of year starts at the same level," said Chara. "It’s something that we have to approach it that way – play hard every game and take care of business."

And for Chara, taking care of business means focusing on what's going on in Game 1 versus the Capitals and not thinking about what happened in Game 7 versus Vancouver last spring.

"We just don’t even talk about [it]. We’re focusing on Game 1 and taking it one game at a time," said Chara on the prospect of repeating. "I think you can’t be looking at something [when] you’re not even there yet."
