Boston, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced, today, March 5, that the team has acquired defenseman Andrej Meszaros from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Boston's third round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Meszaros will join the team for Thursday night's game against the Washington Capitals in Boston.
Chiarelli also announced that the team has claimed defenseman Corey Potter off of waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. Chiarelli will discuss both transactions during his 5:00 p.m. press conference at the TD Garden in Boston on Wednesday evening.
Meszaros has appeared in 38 games for the Flyers this year and has racked up five goals and 12 assists for 17 points (third among Philadelphia defensemen) with 34 penalty minutes.
In total, the 28-year-old blueliner has appeared in 571 NHL games, including 246 with the Ottawa Senators (2005-08), 133 with the Tampa Bay Lightning (2008-10) and 192 with the Philadelphia Flyers (2010-2014). In nine NHL seasons, Meszaros has registered 54 goals and 165 assists for 219 points with a combined plus-34 rating.
Meszaros has skated in 46 career postseason games, registering four goals and 11 assist for 15 points.
Meszaros is a three-time Olympian, representing Slovakia in the 2006 (Turin, Italy), 2010 (Vancouver, Canada) and 2014 (Sochi, Russia) Olympic Games
The 6'2'', 223-pound native of Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
Corey Potter has skated in 16 games with the Edmonton Oilers this season and has recorded five assists with 21 penalty minutes.
In total, Potter has skated in a total of 120 NHL games between the New York Rangers (eight games, 2008-10), Pittsburgh Penguins (one game, 2010-11) and Edmonton Oilers (111 games, 2011-14) where he has accrued eight goals and 24 assists with 53 penalty minutes.
In 327 AHL games, the 30-year-old has notched 28 goals and 111 assists. Prior to getting drafted by the New York Rangers, Potter attended Michigan State University for four seasons (2002-06), where he played in 150 games, scoring eight goals and tallying 36 assists.
The 6'3'', 204-pound native of Lansing, MI was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (122nd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
