BostonBruins.com — On Saturday, the Black & Gold shed skates for sneakers as members of the Boston Bruins Foundation staff participated in the Best Buddies Massachusetts Milton 5K Gobbler.

"We participate in at least one charity race a month, and they’re very casual," said Erin McEvoy, Boston Bruins Foundation Manager, who ran in this weekend’s event. "We have people who are advanced runners that crush it in 25 minutes, and then we have people that show up that day and haven’t run since the last time we showed up together."
As the popularity of road races caught on with some B’s employees and BBF volunteers, running for charitable organizations — all while representing the Boston Bruins Foundation — seemed a natural fit.
"We try to participate in races that are mission-driven, or for a cause, charity, or non-profit that we support," continued McEvoy. "It’s a great feeling, a great opportunity for charity, and it makes it that much more worth while when you’re running as a team for a great cause."
McEvoy said that the monthly races actually began two years ago when a group of employees for the B’s began running at work for exercise. As their numbers expanded, the idea to run in charity races was born.
"It just makes sense because it’s such a social activity that it made sense to sort of start a club and see where it goes," said McEvoy. "Here we are two years later with a solid group of runners that keep coming back and bringing their friends and family.
"It has been exciting to see the growth of this team."
Today, the Foundation Running Club participates in one race every month, and while McEvoy pointed out that the charitable aspect of the events is what makes it worthwhile, she did say there is some friendly competition.
"We definitely have some people that just want to beat one another," said McEvoy with a laugh. "Everyone seems to enjoy themselves.
"It can be hard to drag yourself out of bed on a Saturday, but being able to make some new friends while learning about an amazing charity the foundation supports makes it all worthwhile."
