Unexpected Result

by Bill Davidge / Columbus Blue Jackets

January 9

Wow… didn't see that coming in St. Louis. A 6-1 shellacking at the hands of a team that had only scored nine goals in the past five games was in store for the CBJ. Out shot, outscored and especially outworked.

St. Louis was able to get the puck behind the defense early and often in the first period, and by chip, chase and cycle, the Blues dominated the game from the get go.

STL had gone 0-28 on the PP, but broke the seal with a 1-3 performance, a beauty on a back door play to Tkachuk from rookie Eric Johnson. (three assists on the night)

The speed and deception of MacDonald and Kariya was matched by the grind of Backus, Stempniak and McClement throughout the game.

Two casualties tonight, besides CBJ pride, was the head injury of Andrew Murray and the leg injury of Zherdev. There is not much to report as we just boarded the plane back to Ohio, but it does not look very promising at this time of writing.

The highlight of the night was the 22nd goal of Rick Nash on a great feed from Lindstrom, and for Joakim, it was his fifth point in his fifth game since his recall.

It was certainly nice to have Steve Mason as a back up tonight, as Leclaire was out with a viral condition. Sporting a gold medal and MVP honors from the World Juniors, Steve also was wearing his dad's suit, as his primary ensemble was tucked deep in the confines of a dry cleaner in London, Ontario.

Rick Wamsley was our guest in the pregame of the FSN show. He is awfully proud of his tutledge of the NHL's first star this week, Manny Legace. Rick also is happy with his role as the assistant to Andy Murray, but jokingly says the early mornings are not his favorite… but neither is an empty refrigerator. Wammer… you have to understand, he was a roommate of George Matthews and I for a couple of years, and anytime you get a chance to give him a shot, you do!!

The nice thing that the CBJ have to look forward to on Friday, is the return of the same Blues team to the confines of NWA. Back to back games with St. Louis on Friday and Nashville on Saturday are getting to be more important as they are the competition within the Central Division.

Come out and let us fill the building this weekend. It goes a long way when you know you have the crowd behind you, and we need YOU at this time!!
