This Week in Blue Jackets History: Dec. 16

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Every Wednesday, will highlight the best games and most memorable moments from the history of the Columbus Blue Jackets. This week we look back at the best from December 16-22.

December 18, 2000 –
Ron Tugnutt makes franchise history by recording the first ever shutout for the expansion Blue Jackets. "Tugger" stops all 27 shots he faces helping Columbus blank the Montreal Canadiens 2-0 at the Molson Centre in Montreal. Tugnutt would go on to post three more shutouts in the Jackets' inaugural season and establish an NHL record with 22 wins, the most ever by a goaltender on an expansion team.

December 18, 2006 – Sergei Fedorov haunts his former club, scoring twice (including the game-winning goal) in 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Later in the season, on March 22, 2007, Fedorov repeats the feat by notching the deciding goal in a 2-1 shootout win over Detroit, which marks the first time that Columbus defeats the Central Division rivals three times in the same season.

December 19, 2003 – Rick Nash beats Calgary Flames' goalie Miikka Kiprusoff for his 20th goal of the season. The marker comes in Nash's 31st game of the year, establishing a new franchise record for the quickest to 20 by a Blue Jacket. The Brampton, Ontario native tallies 21 more times throughout the season, en route to 41 goals and a share of the Rocket Richard Trophy with Calgary's Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuk of the Atlanta Thrashers.

December 20, 2005 – David Vyborny takes the ice against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena, playing in his 194th consecutive game for the Blue Jackets. The club record iron man streak, which began on October 17, 2002, comes to an end the following night. Vyborny, the all-time Columbus leader in games played, suffers a rib injury in the Detroit game and is unable to suit up against the Dallas Stars to snap the streak. This past Tuesday, almost two full years to the day later, Jason Chimera passes Vyborny's mark by skating against the Calgary Flames, his 195th consecutive game in a Blue Jackets jersey.
