The numbers game: 2014 CBJ draft class

by Brad Friedman / Columbus Blue Jackets

7: The number of players selected by the Blue Jackets. Three defensemen, two wingers, one center and a goaltender from three different countries (United States, Canada and Latvia.) It was the first time Columbus selected seven players in a draft since 2007, when the city hosted the event.

10: The total number of international tournaments in which the Jackets' 2014 picks have participated. Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins leads the way with five appearances.

16: When Sonny Milano was selected with the 16th pick, he became the second-lowest first round draft selection by Columbus in franchise history - second only to Columbus’ 2009 first round selection of John Moore with the 21st overall pick.

18 years, 102 days: The average age of the group. Tyler Bird checks in at 17 years, 326 days as of today. Meanwhile, Merzlikins has lived a “whopping” 20 years, 85 days. It is also worth noting that fourth-round pick Julien Pelletier turned 18 on the day he was drafted (he thought it was a pretty cool birthday gift).

7: The number of players who will be in Columbus next week when development camp kicks off.
