NASH EARNS FOURTH-STRAIGHT ALL-STAR NOD: LW Rick Nash was named to the Western Conference All-Star Team last week and is expected to play in his fourth-straight ASG when the game is held at Bell Centre in Montreal on Sunday, Jan. 25. Nash leads the Blue Jackets in goals, assists and points with 17-22-39 in 40 games, has also scored a team-high four game-winning goals and has a +9 plus/minus rating. After being shutout in his All-Star debut in 2004 (Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN), he notched 2-2-4 in the 2007 ASG at American Airlines Center in Dallas. At last year's game at Atlanta’s Philips Arena, he set an ASG record when he scored just :12 into the game, surpassing the previous mark for fastest goal to start the game (:19 by Detroit's Ted Lindsay in 1950) and went on to collect the 15th hat trick in the game's history.
MASON SELECTED TO PLAY IN NHL YOUNGSTARS GAME: Rookie G Steve Mason was selected to the NHL's YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck, to be held at Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday, Jan. 24. He is 15-9-1 with a 1.75 goals-against average, .938 save percentage and six shutouts in 25 games this season and leads the NHL in GAA, SV% and SO. He has allowed two goals or less in 16 of his last 20 starts, surrendered just two even-strength goals in his last eight and made 45 saves to record his sixth shutout of the season at Washington on Jan. 9. Mason is the fourth Blue Jacket in club history selected for the YoungStars Game, joining Rostislav Klesla (2002, 2003), Rick Nash (2003) and Nikolai Zherdev (2004).
FILATOV BECOMES FIRST CBJ ROOKIE TO COLLECT HAT TRICK: Three days after being recalled from Syracuse (AHL), C/LW Nikita Filatov became the first rookie in franchise history to collect a hat trick when he scored three goals against Minnesota's Josh Harding in a 4-2 win at Nationwide Arena. The hat trick was the 13th by a Blue Jacket and first since Rick Nash's vs. Edmonton on Dec. 31, 2007. Filatov (18 years, 230 days) joins Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal (the youngest player in NHL history to record a hat trick at 18 years, 153 days vs. Toronto on Feb. 10, 2007) as the only current NHL players to collect hat tricks prior to their 19th birthdays. He has scored four goals on nine shots in six games with Columbus this season; tallied 8-3-11 in seven games, won a bronze medal and was named to the All-Tournament Team with Russia at the 2009 World Junior Championships; and collected 7-10-17 in 23 games with Syracuse.
MISCELLANEOUS: LW Fredrik Modin played in the 800th game of his NHL career vs. Minnesota on Jan. 10 and has registered 219-215-434 and 405 penalty minutes during his career… Rookie RW Jakub Voracek collected a career-high three assists vs. Minnesota on Jan. 10… C R.J. Umberger has tallied 12-9-21 in 42 games this season, including 7-2-9 in nine games vs. Eastern Conference opponents… C Manny Malhotra has picked up 1-5-6 in his past eight games.
JACKETS WRAP UP SEASON'S LONGEST ROAD TRIP WITH A 4-2-0 MARK: The Blue Jackets entered their longest road trip of the season – six games – on Dec. 29 having gone 0-6-1 in their previous seven games away from Nationwide Arena. The club responded by posting a 4-2-0 mark during the trip – Dec. 29 – 2-0 win at Los Angeles, Dec. 31 – 2-0 win at Anaheim; Jan. 2 – 6-1 win at Colorado; Jan. 3 – 5-2 loss at St. Louis; Jan. 6 – 3-0 loss at Detroit; Jan. 9 – 3-0 win at Washington. In beating the Capitals at Verizon Center, the Jackets handed Washington only its second regulation loss at home of the season (18-2-1). Columbus outscored its opponents 15 to 9 in the six games.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Blue Jackets have gone 12-6-1 at Nationwide Arena this season, outscoring their opponents 53 to 48. The club is 7-1-0 in its last eight games at home and has outscored the opposition 20 to 10 during that span. Beginning with last Saturday's 4-2 win over Minnesota, Columbus will play 11-of-16 games at Nationwide Arena, including nine of its first 11 following the All-Star break (Jan. 22-25).
JACKETS FEAST ON THE EAST: Columbus has compiled a 7-1-1 record vs. Eastern Conference opponents this season, which is second-best among all Western Conference clubs (San Jose, 8-1-0). Since suffering a 3-1 loss at home to the NY Rangers on Oct. 24 and falling 4-3 in overtime at the NY Islanders on Nov. 3, the Jackets have won their last seven games against the East, beating Montreal, Atlanta, NY Islanders, Philadelphia and Washington twice.
