Fredrik Norrena, like a few other Blue Jackets, is getting his first taste of the NHL this year. Unlike the youthful first-timers, though, Fredrik has been around long enough to know the days of great music have come and gone. The Finnish goaltender, also, puts an end to the reign of Jason Chimera as everyone’s funniest teammate. Get a glimpse into some of his other preferences in this week’s “Q&A with the CBJ.”
(CBJ.com) – Q: What is it about hockey that you love the most?
(Fredrik) – A: The competition and winning. That’s basically why I play, to win.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What are your personal and team goals for the season?
(Fredrik) – A: My personal goal is to be a good goalie in this league and to help the team when they need me. The team goal should be to get things going here, get some (standings) points, play hard every night and be smart.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your family and growing up in Finland?
(Fredrik) – A: I’m just from an ordinary middle-class family. Mom and Dad worked with boats when I was younger. I have an older brother and a younger sister. I mostly played sports and took care of my schoolwork. I was more into sports than my brother, though. Just an ordinary family.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Who were some of your heroes growing up?
(Fredrik) – A: We just had a small-town hockey league (that everyone followed), and those were the first heroes I looked up to sports-wise. Later, of course, I looked up to the national team players from Finland.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What’s been the highlight of your hockey career so far?
(Fredrik) – A: Of course, the Olympic final. Even if I didn’t play, it was one of the highlights. But everyone championship team I’ve been on, either in Finland or Sweden, has been an honor. To be winning something together…it’s the nicest feeling you can have.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What’s your favorite food?
(Fredrik) – A: Barbequing. It reminds me of the summertime.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What kind of music gets you pumped up?
(Fredrik) – A: (With techno blaring in the dressing room) It’s more classic rock. I grew up in the 80s, so I’m a little bit old for this techno. I stick to stuff like Robbie Williams. KISS was huge when I was young, too.
(CBJ.com) – Q: If you weren’t playing pro hockey, what would you be doing right now?
(Fredrik) – A: I’d probably be involved with some kind of business. I like the competitive aspect.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Who’s your funniest teammate?
(Fredrik) – A: Pazzy. Pazzy’s my funniest teammate. ‘Bubba’ (Anders Eriksson) is funny, too. (NOTE: Pascal Leclaire’s locker is on one side of Fredrik’s, and Anders Eriksson’s locker is on the other.)
(CBJ.com) – Q: Describe Fredrik Norrena in one word.
(Fredrik) – A: “Competitor.”
