Post Game Quotes - Oct. 17 vs. Los Angeles

by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

Los Angeles at Columbus Blue Jackets

Oct. 17, 2009

Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"Our defense is a little bit unsung right now. (Mathieu) Roy stepped up tonight and gave us good minutes and (Marc) Methot stepped up and gave us good minutes. Between the goaltending and the defenseman, that's been the most pleasant surprise (this season)."

Commenting on the scoring…
"Timing is everything. (Raffi) Torres' goal gave us a lift on the power play. (Rick Nash's) goal gave us some breathing room to play with (for the rest of the game). A lot of our scoring chances were in the first period. We had some chances we didn't take advantage of and sometimes that can come back to bite you. We needed our goalie tonight and he was big."

Commenting on the team…
"If we're going to be a better team, we need better play from those top six guys if we're going to get to the next level."

Commenting on the team's penalty kill…
"We made some significant changes in killing penalties. That's been the most consistent, solid part of our game. We've tried to incorporate six forwards and be more comfortable doing that, rather than just using the four. We're trying to have harder, more competitive reads in the PK, and so far, it's working."

Commenting on goaltender Steve Mason
"I thought tonight we needed Mase. He came up big early in the first and came up really big in the third when we needed him. We needed him tonight."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Goaltender Steve Mason

Commenting on the win despite playing without the top two defensemen…

"It's extremely huge the way these guys are stepping up right now, you know, and especially with Commie (defenseman Mike Commodore) and (defenseman Jan Hejda) out with injuries. These guys are coming in and putting a big effort up and they make my job easier. You know with two of our key guys out, this is huge."

Commenting on the effort of the team…
"Yeah, we've been working hard at it, you know we have a lot of guys who compete hard out there and the biggest thing is putting guys out there that are willing to put in that extra effort to make sure that puck gets out, and you know from my position it's nice to see that."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Jason Chimera
Commenting on the upcoming road trip through Alberta and California…

"Yeah it's nice. Sometimes when we go to Alberta, you get a lot of family and friends watching your games and it's always special for me to play in Edmonton and knowing my parents are there and other friends coming to the game, so it's a fun time. It's already hockey weather up there. I heard its snowing up there. You got my dad already shoveling the sidewalks already so it's going to be fun."

Commenting on the goals…
"Yeah, it was good. I think (Rick Nash) Nasher's goal was huge in the third period and getting a shorthanded goal. Raffi (Torres) scored a big goal on the power play and that's big."

Blue Jackets Left Wing Raffi Torres
Commenting on the team's play…

"I think Mathieu Roy did a good job stepping in tonight. He locked a lot of minutes and played hard. Samuel Pahlsson's line did a great job against their top line there and shutting them down. You didn't see too much of them out there."

Los Angeles Kings Quotes

Los Angeles Kings Head Coach Terry Murray

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I am not very happy about the game. Not very happy. We need to check better and make better decisions with the puck. It's a 1-0 game, last minute of the first period and we give them the puck for a two-on-one to tie the game. Those types of decisions and those type of plays cost you every time and that's why, right now, we are losing three games in a row because of plays like that."

Commenting on if he is taking any positives out of the game…
"You have to take something. You have to learn from it, there is not doubt about that. We still have a young group of guys in there that have to learn from every game that they play, and you can't keep trying to hit home runs when you are playing your fifth game on the road and you have a 1-0 lead. It doesn't make any sense and that is what they have to learn and take from a game like this."

Los Angeles Kings Goalie Jonathon Quick

Commenting on tonight's game…

"Columbus is a good team and we are at the end of a road trip, so you have to limit your mistakes against a team like that. Unfortunately they capitalized on the mistakes we made and (Blue Jackets goaltender Steve) Mason played a great game over there to keep us at bay. It's disappointing but at the end of the day we just didn't get it done."

Commenting on Nash's shorthanded goal…
"He is one of the best players in the league. He has tremendous hands. They do a great job on the penalty kill. I think they had a couple of two-on-ones on the penalty kill. With a player like Nash, when he gets an opportunity like that, he is going to capitalize more times than not. It's a tough goal to take because you are only down by one goal at the time and on the power play trying to get a goal and it ends up working against you."

Los Angeles Kings Right Wing Dustin Brown

Commenting on tonight's game…

"I think we got off to a good start. We have a 1-0 lead with a minute left and we have a bad turnover. That game could have been a lot different, I think, if we go into the second period with a 1-0 lead."

Commenting on the current losing streak on the road…
"We were playing really good hockey the first couple of games. Against Detroit and tonight I think we played a few spurts of good hockey. If you expect to win, especially on the road, you have to play 60 minutes of hockey and we are getting away from how we were playing early on."
