Post-Game Notes

St. Louis Blues (3) at Columbus Blue Jackets (4)

February 18, 2009 – Nationwide Arena

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on the third period…

"The third period is why I don't like coaching. We played the score not the game. St. Louis has no quit in their team. Win or lose they play right until the end of the game. We got casual. We put ourselves on our heels."

Commenting on the first two periods…
"We're great. We played outstanding the way we played in the first two periods; we richly deserved what we were getting. We played two great periods the way we had to play against St. Louis. We couldn't have been happier. The way we responded to get the third goal right back again. We really played well the last 10 minutes of the second period."

Commenting on individual efforts…
"Until the line hit the wall, we were really happy with (Jason) Williams, (R.J.) Umberger and (Jakub) Voracek. That line was really good. (Rick) Nash had good jump and I really thought (Andrew) Murray gave us a lot today, he had great jump today."

Commenting on defenseman Fedor Tyutin...
"He's the unsung hero of the hockey club. His play has been outstanding for over a month now. I love the way he's playing right now. He's playing so well with and without the puck, and he's got unbelievable confidence."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Center Manny Malhotra

Commenting on allowing the Blues back in the game…

"We expected to come into the third expecting what we did the first two periods. We knew we had to be the aggressors, we had to continue to be in control of this game and we did the exact opposite. We allowed them to come at us with a lot of speed and we gave them a lot of odd man opportunities and we just didn't play our game. It's something we can clean up and we are going to clean up."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"It's always nice to score and as long as you are contributing in other ways and being strong in whatever the team asks you to do. Playing with those guys, Rick (Nash) and Juice (Kristian Huselius), obviously the points are just going to come with such offensively gifted players, but for me to continue to be strong defensively and be a sound player for this team and whenever the offense comes it's a bonus."

Blue Jackets Defenseman Fedor Tyutin

Commenting on tonight's game…

"It was a pretty good game, overall, for us. The first two periods we played pretty good, built a three-goal lead to give us what we wanted. Then we allowed their forwards to score. You wanted to be the better team (in the third period), but hopefully we learn a lesson from this."

Commenting on the third period…
"We started to relax with the puck. We needed to play like we did the first two periods, bottom line. I think we just need to learn a lesson from that. We just can't let that happen again."

Commenting on his offensive touch…
"That's my game as a defenseman, just try to put the puck on the net and see what happens from there."

St. Louis Blues Quotes
St. Louis Blues Head Coach Andy Murray
Commenting on tonight's game…

"I don't know if it's desperation, it's just not playing smart. We give up a power play goal on a poor call by the official, give up that first goal; we just didn't respond the way that we needed to respond after that little bit of adversity. I think shots were 7-7, scoring chances were pretty even that first period. We turned the puck over; we had full possession of it behind our net, and all the sudden it's 2-0. We made a mistake on the (penalty kill) and we made a mistake when we had the puck."

Commenting on the start of the game…
"I think they only had five shots. It was played a lot in the neutral zone. We didnt start the way that we wanted. That's certainly two games in a row, if you count the (New York) Rangers game as well, where we didn't get the start we wanted."

St. Louis Blues Left Wing Brad Winchester

Commenting on the momentum of the game…

"I think the game's all about momentum. We can get timely goals, or big saves, or maybe a scrap, things that you can build off of. We had a couple of opportunities tonight to jump on some momentum – after the first goal and probably after the (B.J.) Crombeen fight – and we weren't able to grab a hold of that opportunity and go forward."

Commenting on almost coming back from a three-goal deficit…
"We were pressing. We were pressing at the end. Like I said, you get that momentum, we get a late power play goal, and we all the sudden have the jump. We came very close there at the end. The way that we played those last 10 minutes, if we could have put together 60 minutes like those last 10, I think it would have gave ourselves a greater chance for a different outcome."
