Player's Perspective: Ryan Johansen (Vol. 1)

by Ryan Johansen / Columbus Blue Jackets

Someone asked me the other day for my thoughts on Columbus hosting the NHL All-Star Weekend. After seeing all the festivities over the past few days, the first thing that comes to mind is “wow.”

This is awesome. It’s so cool to see the spotlight on the city and the thousands of hockey fans walking around the Arena District, seeing what Columbus has to offer. Like I said on Friday, a few of the guys here aren’t too familiar with Columbus so they’re just now getting to know the restaurants and the best spots. I think everyone’s enjoying having the events so close together, too, with Fan Fair and the draft at the Convention Center and the park down by the arena…it’s been a lot of fun so far.

Speaking of the draft…how much fun was that?

I think everyone had a great time and it was fun for the fans, and I was surprised at how much strategy both captains put into picking the teams. Big honor for me to be picked first overall by my hometown captain Nick Foligno, and hopefully he makes the right decision to keep me as his line mate for the All-Star Game on Sunday.

Personally I think we have the better team (obviously I’m biased) but we’ll see how it all shakes out tonight and tomorrow. I also wanted to thank Blue Jackets fans for voting me into the NHL Breakaway Challenge tonight…that was pretty cool and I didn’t expect to win. Should have never doubted you guys!

Now that means I have to come up with a move that can win this thing. Got any suggestions?
