Mathieu Garon signed as a free agent during the summer makes his first start as a Blue Jacket tonight here in Phoenix as the Jackets conclude their three-game Western swing. Garon, who I thought made a solid showing in four preseason appearances owns a 5-3-1 record against the Coyotes with a respectable 2.36 goals-against average. The plan is for Garon not to sit long between starts. Coach Hitchcock says Garon will play every seven to 10 days and as far as tonight's start is concerned the Jackets coach said he is looking forward to seeing Garon play.
Both Kris Russell and Andrew Murray are back in the lineup tonight after not playing in San Jose. Jarred Boll gets another night off although Boll told me he feels 100 percent and I look for him to return to the lineup Tuesday at Nationwide against the Calgary Flames in what will be a non-televised game.
Coach Hitchcock says he is hopeful that both Mike Commodore, who is with the club, and Freddie Modin will be well enough to rejoin the team for practice Monday.
As for the Coyotes, they are off to a solid start, they are 2-1-0 and host the Jackets after starting the season with three games on the road. There will be a sellout crowd on hand for tonight's game and look for a familiar face on the Coyotes bench. Yes, that will be the first coach in Blue Jackets history Dave King on the bench. We had a nice visit with King this morning and he has nothing but fond memories of his time in Columbus and the Jackets organization.
The Coyotes swept the season series with the CBJ last year and Coach Hitchcock says "we didn't show them enough respect."
Ilya Bryzgalov gets the start for Phoenix tonight. Bryzgalov won all three starts against the Jackets last season posting a 1.00 goals against average, 968 save percentage and recorded one shutout.
Game time is set for 9 p.m. ET with the "Blue Jackets Live" pre-game show starting at 8:30 p.m. ET with host Ray Crawford.
