Finally Something Good

by Jeff Rimer / Columbus Blue Jackets

January 9

With the honor well deserved, Blue Jackets netminder Steve Mason was today named to the "Youngstars" line-up that will take part in the All-Star Weekend festivities later this month in Montreal. Mason, who makes his ninth straight start here in Washington against the Capitals tonight, did leave practice a tad early this morning... but Coach Ken Hitchcock says he is ready to go. Mason goes into tonight's game against a loaded Washington lineup leads NHL netminders in goals-against average, save percentage and is tied for the league lead in shutouts

While we suggest the Capitals have a loaded lineup and they DO!! They have won nine in a row at home and 12 of the last 13 overall... The Jackets will send out a lineup without eight regulars... six of whom are on injured reserve. Four of the top six forwards will not play tonight... but despite that... Coach Hitchcock said after this morning's skate that the team has been preparing for tonight's game for a few days and as long as they follow the "good game plan" the coaches have devised they should be fine.

Nikita Filatov fresh from leading Russia to a Bronze Medal at the World Junior where he was the team's captain and scored eight goals and registered 10 points. He will be playing in his fifth NHL game tonight, against friend Alex Ovechkin.
