Columbus USHL franchise to conduct training camp at Dispatch Ice Haus June 28-30

by Staff Writer / Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus franchise participating in the United States Hockey League beginning this fall will hold a training camp at the Dispatch Ice Haus, located at Nationwide Arena, from June 28-30. The camp will include daily practice/skill sessions and scrimmage games and will conclude with a Blue vs. White All-Star game at 6 p.m. on June 30.

USHL Membership (May 3)

The team has to cut its roster down to 25 players by July 1 and currently have 30 players on its protected list, as well as free agents invited to attend the camp to earn a roster position for the upcoming 2006-07 season.

“We are excited to see our draft picks, tendered players and invited free agents who will come in and compete for roster positions” said the team's director of hockey operations Don Harkins. “We expect a very competitive camp, and encourage fans to attend the daily scrimmages and the All-Star Game to see what this level of Tier I Junior A hockey is all about."

The USHL announced on May 3 that membership in the league had been approved for a franchise to play in Columbus beginning with the 2006-07 season. The club will be operated by Ohio Junior Hockey, Inc., led by the Cleveland-area Goebel family, with game and arena operations managed by the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets. The team name, logo, head coach, schedule and ticketing information will be announced at a press conference later this month.

The USHL is the country's premier development league, holding the highest classification of U.S. junior hockey with an emphasis on preparing players for the NCAA Division I college ranks and the NHL. Each year, the league sends over 100 players to Division I colleges on hockey scholarships and has 15 players selected in the NHL Entry Draft on average. All players must be 20 years of age or under before the current season begins. The USHL averages more than one million in attendance each season with teams playing a 60-game regular season schedule.
