by Blue Jackets Staff / Columbus Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has nominated Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the club announced April 7. The award is given annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Boll, 23, tallied four goals and three assists for seven points with a team-leading 149 penalty minutes and ranking third with 123 hits in 68 games this season before suffering a season ending hand injury at New Jersey on March 23. This season marks the third-straight in which he has led the club in penalty minutes.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina and raised near Chicago, Boll was Columbus' fourth pick, 101st overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft. He played two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League and two with the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers before joining the Blue Jackets as a rookie in 2007-08. He has collected 13-18-31 and 555 penalty minutes in 218 career NHL games.

The winner of the Masterton Trophy is selected by a poll of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the conclusion of the regular season. The trophy was first presented by the NHL writers in 1968 in honor of the late Bill Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars who exhibited the qualities for which the trophy embodies, and who died on Jan. 15, 1968. Last year’s winner was Nashville's Steve Sullivan. Previous Blue Jackets nominees for the award include: Kevin Dineen (2000-01 and 2001-02, finalist both years), Luke Richardson (2002-03), Manny Malhotra (2003-04), Duvie Westcott (2005-06), Fredrik Norrena (2006-07), Pascal Leclaire (2007-08) and Raffi Torres (2008-09).

The Blue Jackets return to action tonight when they visit the Detroit Red Wings. Game time from Joe Louis Arena is 7:30 p.m. ET.
