COLUMBUS, OHIO – In observance of Veterans Day, the Columbus Blue Jackets will pay tribute to those who have served or are currently serving in the nation's armed forces during Military Appreciation Night on Wednesday, November 10 when the Jackets play host to the St. Louis Blues at 7 p.m.
The evening will be highlighted by The American Patriot Program's very special recognition of a combat wounded veteran of the United States Marine Corps. USMC Corporal Greg Hughes, wounded in action while serving in Iraq in 2005 with Ohio's Lima Company 3/25, 4th Marine Regiment, was serving as a turret gunner when a vehicle planted with an explosive device was detonated near his humvee. During Military Appreciation Night, The American Patriot Program, Vaughn Hockey and 2009 American Patriot Award recipient John Chestna will present Cpl. Hughes with the 2010 award. Also on Wednesday, the participating charity for the Blue Jackets Foundation's 50/50 Raffle will be Operation Buckeye, a local organization that sends troops boxes containing food and snacks, personal hygiene items, reading materials, and messages of support. Near the end of the game, one lucky winner will win 50% of the total raffle sales with the other half supporting Operation Buckeye. Tickets priced at $1 will be sold at multiple locations throughout the arena. For more information on Operation Buckeye, visit www.operationbuckeye.org.
Before the game, the 338th U.S. Army Band will entertain fans on the concourse. Prior to puck drop, the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines will be represented during the pre-game ritual of carrying the flag followed by the multi-service Honor Guard's participation in the presentation of the national anthem. The evening will also feature in-game recognition of all current and former military personnel in attendance. In addition, fans may express their appreciation by signing cards that will be sent to overseas troops by The Thank You Foundation.
