St. Louis Blues to select first overall as a result of NHL Draft Drawing held today

The Columbus Blue Jackets will have the sixth overall pick at the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft as a result of the NHL Draft Drawing held on Thursday at the NHL's office in New York City, Blue Jackets President and General Manager Doug MacLean announced Thursday.

The St. Louis Blues won the drawing and will select first, followed by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins at the draft, hosted by the Vancouver Canucks at General Motors Place on Saturday, June 24. This year will marked the second draft in which Columbus has had the sixth pick as the club took Vancouver Giants forward Gilbert Brule at the 2005 Entry Draft.

The 14 teams that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or clubs that acquired first round draft picks from the non-playoff teams, participated in the Draft Drawing. Selected clubs could not move up more than four positions or down more than one in the draft order as a result of the Draft Drawing. The order of the first 14 selections at this year's draft are as follows:
1) St. Louis Blues
2) Pittsburgh Penguins
3) Chicago Blackhawks
4) Washington Capitals
5) Boston Bruins
6) Columbus Blue Jackets
7) New York Islanders
8) Phoenix Coyotes
9) Minnesota Wild
10) Florida Panthers
11) Los Angeles Kings
12) Atlanta Thrashers
13) Toronto Maple Leafs
14) Vancouver Canucks

The weighted lottery system gave the club with the fewest regular season points the greatest chance of winning the Draft Drawing. Under the lottery system, only the five teams with the fewest points had a chance to claim the first selection, while no team could move up more than four spots or down more than one. This year's participating clubs, listed in order of the percentage chance of being selected first, were as follows:
St. Louis 25.0%
Pittsburgh 18.8%
Chicago 14.2%
Washington 10.7%
Boston 8.1%
Columbus 6.2%
NY Islanders 4.7%
Phoenix 3.6%
Minnesota 2.7%
Florida 2.1%
Los Angeles 1.5%
Atlanta 1.1%
Toronto 0.8%
Vancouver 0.5%
