The 2009 NHL Winter Classic features an "Original Six" matchup of Central Division clubs as the Chicago Blackhawks take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. The game will be televised live on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. ET on NBC 4. The contest will be the third outdoor game in league history. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003, while the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in a shootout at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York on Jan. 1, 2008.
The Blue Jackets return home to Nationwide Arena tonight to take on the San Jose Sharks.
