Blue Jackets Center Derick Brassard to Undergo Season Ending Shoulder Surgery

by Staff Writer / Columbus Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who suffered a dislocated shoulder on December 18 at Dallas, will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the 2008-09 season, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Anthony Miniaci, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Center, in early-January.

Brassard, 21, was injured during the first period of last Thursday’s 6-5 shootout loss at Dallas shortly after scoring his 10th goal of the season. He tallied 10-15-25 with 17 penalty minutes and a +12 plus/minus rating in 31 games this season and currently leads all NHL rookies in scoring. He leads the Blue Jackets in assists, plus/minus and power play goals (three, tied) and ranks second in points and goals (tied).

Columbus’ first pick, sixth overall, in the 2006 Entry Draft, Brassard was the NHL’s Rookie of the Month in October and had collected points in 20-of-31 games this season. He made his NHL debut a year ago, tallying 1-1-2 and six penalty minutes in 17 games. He also notched 15-36-51 and 51 penalty minutes in 42 games with the Syracuse Crunch, the Blue Jackets’ American Hockey League affiliate in 2007-08.
