White Hot: White Beats Red 5-4 In Scrimmage

by Brad Boron / Chicago Blackhawks

Just when it seemed that the Red Team was on its way to its third straight prospects camp scrimmage victory, White overcame a 4-0 deficit late in the second period to win it 5-4.

The White victory featured some impressive goaltending performances on both sides. Joe Palmer held Red scoreless during his work in the second and third periods, allowing his team to come back with a 5-0 run. Red goalie Antti Niemi had his best day of camp so far, holding White scoreless through the first period and making some key saves.

“I think today was [Niemi’s] best day,” said Rockford Head Coach Mike Haviland. “He showed why we signed him and why everybody else in the NHL was really after him.”

Free agent Mike Radja continued his impressive camp, scoring a goal and registering two assists. He has scored 7 points (2 G, 5 A) in three scrimmages.

“Playing with Mike Radja, obviously you have to notice him,” said forward Ben Smith, who also scored a goal and an assist today. “He’s just so skilled and quick with the puck. He just makes plays.”

Radja, who played four years at the University of New Hampshire before playing 2 games at the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch last year, hopes he can get noticed enough to earn a contract.

“I’m just trying to work hard and hope the coaches and management notices me,” said Radja. “If a contract comes out of it, that’s the best-case scenario, but I’m not really counting on anything right now.”

The game also featured two fights. In the second period, Brennan Turner was forced to leave after Richard Greenop cut him above his eye during a fight. Late in the third period, a fight between Dan Bertram and Joe Pleckaitis stopped play, wiping out an Igor Makarov goal that would have tied the game at 5-5.
