GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- University of North Dakota center Jonathan Toews, who led all WCHA players over the weekend with six scoring points as the host Fighting Sioux took three of four points from league rival Minnesota State, has been named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Feb. 13-19.
A 6-2, 202-pound sophomore from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Toews scored four goals and added two assists in the Feb. 9-10 series, fired nine shots on goal, and earned a +5 plus-minus rating as No. 10-ranked North Dakota (16-11-3) won 8-4 over the Mavericks last Friday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks and then posted a 4-4 overtime tie last Saturday.
A first round (No. 3 overall) NHL draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, Toews scored two goals, including a shorthander, and set up two others for four points on Feb. 9 and then scored two more goals on Feb. 10.
A member of Canada¹s gold medal-winning national junior team the past two consecutive seasons, Toews has now produced 15 points (6g,9a) in his past five games and is also in the midst a six-game point-scoring streak.
Overall this season, he shows 11-20-31 in 21 games to rank second among his Fighting Sioux teammates.
