Both sidelined by upper-body injuries, center Jonathan Toews
and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson
will not be on the ice Friday when Chicago faces the Senators in Ottawa, but both are making progress, Head Coach Joel Quenneville said Thursday.
Hjalmarsson traveled to Ottawa with the team Thursday. Toews remained in Chicago but was not ruled out for the remainder of the three-game road trip to Ottawa, Detroit and St. Louis.
“Hammer felt really good today, so he’s going to come on the trip,” Quenneville said of the defenseman, who has been participating in full practices. “He’s out for tomorrow, but we hope that he’ll be playing [soon].”
Quenneville said Toews’ injury remains day-to-day, but added that there’s a chance that the captain joins the team on the road.
“He’s getting the proper attention and he’s working with our trainers. He’s doing his routine and he’s progressing,” Quenneville said.
Hjalmarsson has missed 10 of the last 11 games dating back to Feb. 10 at San Jose. Toews last played Feb. 19 against St. Louis and has missed the past five games. News and notes: Ray Emery
will start for the Blackhawks in net on Friday… Viktor Stalberg
did not practice Thursday, but Quenneville called his absence a “maintenance day.” He is expected to play against the Senators.
