Depleted Admirals Fall In Albany

by Staff Writer / Chicago Blackhawks

ALBANY, NY - Three River Rats forwards had a pair of goals to lead the Albany River Rats (23-24-2-2) past a Norfolk Admirals (37-13-4-1) squad depleted by call-ups, injuries and illnesses on Friday night at the Times Union Center.

The River Rats took a 3-0 lead after one period. After David Gove won a faceoff back to the slot, Cody McCormick rifled a slap shot through a screen and past Norfolk netminder Joel Martin at 7:12 to open scoring.

Dan DaSilva doubled the Albany lead seven minutes later on the power play when his shot from the left circle squeezed between the post and Martin's right shoulder at 14:44. Jakub Petruzalek gave the River Rats a 3-0 lead at 18:33 when his shot from the left circle beat Martin five-hole.

Norfolk came out of the first intermission with Corey Crawford in net and quickly set out to erase their three-goal deficit. Colin Fraser got the Admirals on the board 1:19 into the second stanza. Jordan Hendry's point shot deflected off a skate to Fraser in the low slot, and Fraser swept the puck into the net.

It looked as if the Admirals could build upon that goal with a power play opportunity ten minutes later. However, Antti Laaksonen netted a shorthanded goal off a Matt Murley rebound to re-establish a three-goal Albany lead at 11:49.

McCormick scored his second goal of the night on a River Rats power play when he received a cross-ice pass, deked Crawford to commit short-side before skating around him and scoring past his left leg at 17:48 of the middle period.

The River Rats and Admirals swapped two final frame markers to conclude the contest. Defenseman Mike Jarmuth tallied his first career AHL and Admirals goal in his second Admirals game with a one-timer as a power play expired 5:29 into the third period. Laaksonen tallied a power play goal at 7:47 against Martin, who returned in net for the third period.

David Bolland's shot from just inside the right circle found its way through goaltender Tyler Weiman's legs at 14:09. DaSilva's second goal of the game at 15:52 capped scoring at 7-3 in favor of Albany.

Martin (19 shots, 14 saves) played the first and third periods and did not receive a decision. Crawford (15 shots, 13 saves) played the second period and received the loss. Weiman (27 shots, 24 saves) picked up the victory for Albany.

The Admirals were 0-5 on the power play. Portland was 3-7.

The Admirals played the game without several players. On recall to the Chicago Blackhawks were leading scorer Martin St. Pierre, captain Craig MacDonald, and right wing Pierre Parenteau. Out due to injuries were defensemen Steve Munn and Bruno St. Jacques.

Goaltender Mike Broduer and center Jonas Nordqvist both did not dress because of illness, and several Admirals in the lineup - including goaltender Corey Crawford and defenseman Jordan Hendry - were battling flu-like symptoms.

The Admirals will head to Elmira, New York tomorrow for a meeting against the Binghamton Senators to continue a season-long ten-game road trip.
