SATURDAY'S BLACKHAWK CUP QUARTERFINALS
GLENBROOK NORTH 2, NEW TRIER GREEN 0: Heading into Saturday's Blackhawk Cup state playoff game with New Trier Green, Glenbrook North was the only team in Illinois to beat the top-ranked Trevians this season.
Now the Spartans are only team to knock them off twice.
Glenbrook North, the eighth-seed, upset New Trier Green 2-0 at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville to advance to the Final Four of the Blackhawk Cup state tournament for the second straight year.
The Spartans' Jared Weiss and Dan Carroll scored goals two minutes apart from each other in third period to break a scoreless stalemate.
Goaltender William Dodge was strong in the net for Glenbrook North, which was outplayed by the powerful Trevians for most of the game.
Still, Weiss and Carroll each found a way to slip pucks past New Trier's Mark Ingram, who finished with 17 saves.
As a result, the Trevians failed to make the Final Four for the first time in the past 10 years.
Glenbrook North beat New Trier 7-2 in late January.
GLENBROOK SOUTH 6, MOUNT CARMEL 1: In a matchup between to two local powerhouses, Glenbrook South ended up having a lot more power than Mount Carmel.
The No. 4 Titans crushed the No. 5 Caravan 6-1 Saturday at The Edge Ice Arena to advance to the Final Four.
Scott Pfiffner and Nick Stuercke each scored two goals to pace the defending state champion Titans, who outshot the Caravan 42-17.
Chris Benz and Trevor Stevens also scored for Glenbrook South, which broke the game open by netting three goals in second period. Jason Nesbitt made 16 saves to get the win.
Richard Odom scored the only goal for the Caravan.
SUNDAY'S BLACKHAWK CUP QUARTERFINALS
FENWICK 5, SANBURG 1: Fenwick allowed its first goal of Blackhawk Cup state tournament Sunday in a quarterfinal game against Sandburg.
But it takes a lot a more than one goal to beat the mighty Friars.
Fenwick, which won back-to-back state titles in 2003 and 2004, knocked off Sandburg 5-1 on Sunday to advance to the Final Four of the Blackhawk Cup.
The No. 2 Friars scored three times in the second period to break a scoreless tie. Mike Freitag and K.C. Madock each had two goals to pace the Friars, who have the most wins in the state with 54.
Nick Powers also scored for Fenwick, which has outscored its opponents in the Blackhawk Cup by a stunning 20-1 margin.
Freitag added two assists in the game.
LOYOLA GOLD 3, STEVENSON 2: Loyola Gold's record, which hovers around .500, is deceiving. The Ramblers have played some of best teams in the United States and Canada this season.
And on Sunday, Loyola Gold showed why it is one of the best teams in Illinois, by defeating No. 6 Stevenson 3-2 to advance to the Blackhawk Cup's Final Four.
With the game tied 2-2, Kevin Creevy tallied the game-winning goal in the third period for Loyola Gold.
Brendan Farley and Josh Dessent also scored for No. 3 Loyola Gold, which lost to Glenbrook South in last year's Blackhawk Cup final.
Quinn Brennolt and Casey Vanberwil scored for the Patriots.
