NORFOLK (2) AT MANCHESTER MONARCHS (1) OT
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - For the second straight night, an Admirals rookie scored his first professional goal in overtime, as Adam Burish's tally gave Norfolk a 2-1 overtime victory over the Monarchs on Sunday evening in Manchester.
After a scoreless opening period, Brandon Bochenski gave the Admirals the lead with his team-leading eleventh goal of the season 5:32 into the second stanza. The Admirals broke up a Manchester passing play inside the Monarch's blue line and sent Bochenski on a breakaway.
The right winger broke in on Manchester goalie Barry Brust without a deke and sent a forehand snap shot over the left leg pad. After being outshot 12-6 in the opening period, the Admirals sent 14 second period shots on Brust to the Monarchs' five on Corey Crawford. They led 1-0 after two periods.
It appeared as if Bochenski's goal would stand as the game-winner, as Norfolk's penalty kill shut down the number one power play eight times in the game - including twice in the final frame of regulation.
However, T. J. Kemp broke up Crawford's shutout bid and sent the game to overtime by scoring with just 18 seconds remaining in the game. The goal came while Manchester had an extra attacker when Kemp sent a wrister through traffic and past a screened Crawford at 19:42.
In overtime, Jonas Nordqvist stole the puck just over the Manchester blue line and dropped a pass to Burish at the left edge of the slot. Burish sent a snap shot just inside the post and past Brust's right leg to win the game for Norfolk 2:55 into overtime.
Crawford made 25 saves on 26 shots and earned the victory. Barry Brust stopped 27 of 29 Norfolk shots but picked up the overtime loss.
In a game that pitted the top two power plays in the American Hockey League against one another, it was the penalty kill that prevailed. The Admirals were 0-5 on the power play while the Monarchs were 0-8.
The Admirals ended their six-game road trip with three wins, two losses and one shootout loss. All three wins came in overtime, as Brandon Bochenski, David Bolland and Adam Burish all netted overtime game-winning goals.
Norfolk (10-2-1-1) is once again atop the East Division standings with 22 points. Hershey (10-1-0-1) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (10-3-1-0) are tied for second with 21 points.
