A few players in the Avalanche organization will have new numbers on the back of their jerseys when training camp rolls around.
While the reasoning behind jersey number assignments can vary, players will little or no NHL experience are often assigned higher numbers at camp. But as time goes on and they establish themselves, those players often have the opportunity to change their sweater numbers to more “traditional” digits.
Some players choose to follow that route, while others stick with their assigned numbers throughout their career. And in some cases, the decision on jersey numbers is left up to the team's coaches.
Below is a glance at some of the new numbers players will be wearing at this year’s training camp.
“Last Worn By” denotes the last Avalanche/Nordiques player to wear the number during an NHL contest.#12 – Kevin Porter
Porter wore #32 after being acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes at the trade deadline last season, becoming the eighth player to wear that number for the franchise, but that was short-lived, as the forward will enter the 2010-11 campaign with No. 12 on his back. Porter previously wore No. 23 with the Coyotes and No. 11 during his four seasons at the University of Michigan.Last Worn By: Darren Haydar (2010)#16 – Justin Mercier
After wearing No. 43 during his nine games with the Avalanche in 2009-10, the Miami (Ohio) University product will switch to No. 16 this season. Mercier, who also wore No. 43 with the Lake Erie Monsters last season, spent all four years of his NCAA career as No. 16 for the RedHawks.Last Worn By: Darcy Tucker (2008-10)#18 – Brandon Yip
Yip, who led all NHL rookies in goals-per-game last season (0.34), will switch from No. 59 to No. 18 for the upcoming campaign. That’s not surprising, since Yip wore No. 18 during his four seasons at Boston University. Other notables to wear No. 18 for the organization include Marian Stastny, Mike Hough, Adam Deadmarsh, Chris Drury and Alex Tanguay.Last Worn By: Stephane Yelle (2010)#42 – Ray Macias
Macias didn’t see action with the Avalanche last season, but did appear in six games during the 2008-09 campaign while wearing No. 47. Only three players have worn No. 42 in a game for the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise (Bruce Major, Jon Klemm and Chris Stewart).Last Worn By: Chris Stewart (2008-09)
