Numbers Game: 2010 Draft Choices

by Aaron Lopez / Colorado Avalanche
Six of the Avalanche’s eight choices from the 2010 NHL Entry Draft will be in attendance at rookie camp, including first-round selection Joey Hishon.

Below, you’ll find the numbers that Colorado’s youngest prospects will be wearing during their first NHL camp.

“Last Worn By” denotes the last Avalanche/Nordiques player to wear the number during an NHL contest.

#38 – Joey Hishon
Hishon, Colorado’s first-round selection (17th overall) at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, will wear No. 38 while attending his first professional camp. The last player to have the number for the Avalanche was Jim Dowd during the 2005-06 campaign. Hishon has worn No. 18 with the Owen Sound Attack for the past three seasons.
Last Worn By: Jim Dowd (2005-06)

#45 – Luke Walker
Tabbed in the fifth round (139th overall), Walker has been assigned No. 45 for training camp. For the past three years Walker has sported No. 14 for the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, where he has totaled 130 points (65g/65a) in 202 games.
Last Worn By: Chris Durno (2009-10)

#59 – Michael Bournival
At the June draft, Bournival became the first player from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Shawinigan Cataractes to ever be selected by the Avalanche. Bournival will wear No. 59 in training camp, which was held by Brandon Yip last season. In addition to Yip, No. 59 has been worn by Dave Karpa (1992-95), Brian White (1998-99) and Philippe Dupuis (2008-09).
Last Worn By: Brandon Yip (2009-10)

#62 – Troy Rutkowski
Selected two spots ahead of his Walker, his Portland teammate, Rutkowski (fifth round, 137th overall) has suited up as No. 2 for the last two seasons in the Western Hockey League. Rutkowski was the first Portland Winterhawk ever drafted by the Avalanche. Only two players have worn No. 62 in franchise history, those being Paul Stastny and Wes O’Neill.
Last Worn By: Wes O’Neill (2009-10)

#63 – Stephen Silas
Silas has skated as No. 26 the past two years with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls, but obviously that number is already occupied by another member of the Avalanche. Only one player has previously played an NHL game while wearing No. 63 for the Avalanche/Nordiques.
Last Worn By: Joel Prpic (2000-01)

#64 – Calvin Pickard
Pickard, the top-rated North American goalie in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, was selected by the Avalanche in the second round (49th overall). He will wear No. 64 at training camp, a number that no Avalanche/Nordiques player has ever worn during an NHL contest.
