Avs' Pee Wee Team Earns Runner-Up Honors

by Staff Writer / Colorado Avalanche
QUEBEC CITY – The Colorado Avalanche Pee Wee hockey team competing in the 50th Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament held in Quebec City finished second overall, falling to the Hershey Bears 3-1 in today’s class B tournament final. Each year the tournament hosts 110 teams from 14 countries; and is known world-wide as one of the largest and most prestigious Pee Wee hockey tournaments.

The Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers, coached by Steve Hammer, earned this unique opportunity by winning the Colorado Avalanche Quebec Qualifier Tournament in November 2008. As a result, the Jr. Tigers received full sponsorship from the Avalanche organization including travel, lodging, complete Avalanche uniforms, and travel gear for the Quebec Tournament.

The Avalanche Pee Wee club posted a 4-2 tournament record, defeating teams from Atlanta, England, New Brunswick and the top-ranked Class B Pee Wee team in the province of Quebec, the Quebec Frontenac en route to today’s championship game.

This was the second time that an Avalanche Pee Wee club has advanced to the international tournament finals. In 2003, the Avalanche-sponsored Littleton Hawks claimed the tournament title. The Avalanche has been involved in supporting a local Pee Wee club in the tournament each of the last seven years.

In addition to being an invaluable on-ice hockey experience, some of the best experiences for the players come through the billeting process. This process, which takes players and pairs them with Canadian families, provides additional experiences and creates relationships that players will remember for a lifetime. The host families act as their personal guides of historic Quebec City and provide insight of the distinctive Quebec culture.

The Colorado Avalanche charitable endeavors have resulted in over $11.5 million raised for local families and children since 1995.
