The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today its preseason and regular season schedules for the upcoming 2008-09 National Hockey League campaign. The Avalanche will open its 13th season in Denver by hosting the Boston Bruins on Thursday, Oct. 9 at Pepsi Center.
The NHL’s adjusted schedule will have the Avalanche facing each of the Eastern Conference teams at least once this season, playing a total of 18 games against Eastern opponents (nine at home, nine away). The Avs’ home slate features all five Northeast Division teams, including Original Six members Boston, Montreal and Toronto, as well as a visit from Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Avalanche will play a home-and-home against Atlanta, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.
Colorado will face its division rivals six times each this season (three home, three away) and the other Western Conference teams four times apiece (twice at home).
The Avalanche will have an eight-game homestand from Jan. 16 - Feb. 5. The eight-game stay, which does include the NHL All-Star Break in the middle, is the second longest in Avalanche history behind a nine-game homestand wrapped around the Olympic Break in 2001-02. This year’s schedule also includes a six-game roadtrip, Feb. 20 - March 2, matching the club’s longest trip since moving to Denver. The Avs also had a six-game journey in the fall of 1998.
The Avalanche is scheduled to play four afternoon contests at Pepsi Center this year, including back-to-back day games to end the season on April 11-12 against Vancouver and St. Louis. Colorado will play 17 “weekend” games at home this year, including five on Friday night, seven on Saturday and five on Sunday. The Avs are slated for eight back-to-back sets.
The complete broadcast schedule, including Altitude Sports & Entertainment telecasts, and information regarding the on-sale dates for preseason and regular season tickets will be released in the near future.
