Avalanche Play of the Week: Dec.18-24

by - Official Site of the Colorado Avalanche / Colorado Avalanche is asking for your help in determining the Avalanche's "Play of the Week" each week during the regular season. At the end of the year, a bracket-style tournament will be held to determine, via fan voting, the Avalanche's "Play of the Year."

Goals by Chris Stewart, Matt Hendricks and Brandon Yip are this week's nominees.

Voting ends on Monday, Dec. 28 at 3:00 p.m. MT, so be sure to cast your ballot today!

Stewart’s Bomb – 12/21 @ Minnesota
Chris Stewart gave the Avalanche a 2-0 lead over the Minnesota Wild with a rocket of a shot that beat Niklas Backstrom. Paul Stastny carried the puck over the blue line and left a drop pass for Stewart, who took a few additional strides before putting all of his weight into a screaming slap shot from the right faceoff circle that eluded Backstrom high to his blocker side.

Hendricks Caps 2-on-0 – 12/21 @ Minnesota
With the Avalanche short-handed, Matt Hendricks netted the eventual game-winning goal on a strange play. Hendricks registered a takeaway near Colorado’s blue line and tossed a clearing attempt down the ice. On what should have been a routine play, the Wild executed an untimely line change, leaving Hendricks and Cody McLeod with a 2-on-0 breakaway. Hendricks caught up with the puck himself and fed McLeod, who gave it right back to Hendricks for the goal.

Yip’s First Goal – 12/22 vs. Anaheim
Rookie Brandon Yip netted his first career NHL goal in just his third game. Yip first chipped a Brett Clark pass into Anaheim’s zone, where it was gathered by Matt Hendricks. Yip then skated into the right faceoff circle, where he took a return pass from Hendricks and fired a low shot past Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller.
