Alcen Claims Silver Medal at World Juniors

by Aaron Lopez / Colorado Avalanche
Colorado Avalanche prospect and Team Sweden forward Johan Alcen claimed a silver medal Saturday at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Pardubice, Czech Republic.

Alcen, who was Colorado’s ninth selection (seventh round, 195th overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, recorded an assist in Sweden’s 3-2 overtime loss to Canada in the gold-medal game. He finished the tournament with four points (1g/3a) in six contests. Alcen’s one goal in the tournament came when he notched the game-winner with 4:57 remaining during Sweden’s 4-3 victory over Slovakia in the tournament opener.

Meanwhile, Avalanche prospects Kevin Montgomery and Mike Carman fell short in their quest for a medal after Team USA dropped a 4-2 decision to Russia in Saturday’s bronze-medal game. Carman totaled three points (2g/1a) in six contests and was one of only five U.S. players to notch more than one goal in the tournament. Montgomery was held pointless in six games, recording three shots on goal.
