by Staff Writer / Colorado Avalanche
Earlier today, Sweden defeated Switzerland 6-2 and Finland defeated the United States 4-3.

In the nightcap, Russia beat Canada 2-0 and the Czech Republic knocked off Slovakia 3-1.

The winners of each game advanced to Friday's semifinals.

Both Slovakia and Finland finished the preliminary round undefeated, as Slovakia beat Sweden 3-0 on Tuesday and Finland beat Germany 2-0. Slovakia finished first in Group B and secured an intriguing first-round matchup with the Czech Republic. The two nations used to be know as one, Czechoslovakia, until they split in the early 1990's.

The Finns earned the top spot in Group A and will take on the United States.

Russia defeated Team USA by a 5-4 final on Tuesday to wrap up second place in Group B. They will take on Canada in perhaps the best matchup of the opening round. Canada bounced back from two straight losses to beat the Czechs 3-2 in their final tuneup on Tuesday.

Switzerland earned the second spot in Group A after a 3-3 tie with Italy on Tuesday. The Swiss will meet Sweden in the quarterfinals.
