Rookie League

Play the Game! Now that your child has the basics covered, let's take it up a notch! Each player will have the chance to put their skills to the test in a fun and competitive environment. Participants will learn the basic game and team concepts, plus, they will build important characteristics on and off the ice: teamwork, responsibility, and respect. Once a week, for 10 weeks, your child will have the opportunity to play games led by Rangers staff. It is a fun way to meet new teammates and play some hockey!

Your $395 league fee includes:

1 game and 1 practice session a week per 10-week season

No long distance travel as all games are hosted at your local rink

Guest coaching appearances from NYR Alumni and access to special events

Junior Rangers team jersey (limited to your first registration)

Format:

The league has been designed to offer families an experience for recreational players. Each week consists of 1 hour of games and 1 practice session per week led by the Rangers Hockey Development Team.

What is Junior Rangers Rookie League?

Rookie League is the next step in the Junior Rangers player pathway following Learn to Play. Designed for beginner and developing hockey players, Rookie League combines weekly practices with recreational cross-ice games, allowing participants to continue building their skills while learning the fundamentals of team play in a fun and supportive environment.

Each 10-week season includes one (1) practice and one (1) game per week at your selected rink.

Who is Rookie League designed for?

Rookie League is recommended for: 

  • Players who have completed Learn to Play or have equivalent hockey experience.  

  • Beginner hockey players who are ready to apply their skills in game situations.  

  • Players looking for a fun, recreational league without extensive travel or a highly competitive environment.  

  • Rookie League is not for current travel hockey payers.

Is Rookie League a travel hockey program?

No.

All practices and games are held at your selected Rookie League rink. There is no long-distance travel, making Rookie League an excellent option for families looking for a local recreational hockey experience.

Is Rookie League competitive?

Rookie League introduces players to friendly competition while maintaining an instructional environment. 

Coaches focus on player development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and learning the game rather than wins and losses.

What skills will my child continue to develop?

What is included with registration?

Registration includes: 

  • One (1) practice each week

  • Opportunities for special guest appearances and Junior Rangers events throughout the season.

How many ice sessions are included?

Each week includes: 

  • One practice session  

  • One game  

This provides approximately two hours of on-ice development each week over a 10-week season.

Can my child play multiple Rookie League seasons?

Absolutely. 

Many participants return for multiple seasons before advancing to local youth hockey associations or travel programs

Can siblings register together?

Yes. 

Each participant must register separately.

Is there a waitlist?

Yes. 

If a location reaches capacity, families may join the waitlist. Credit cards are not charged unless a roster spot becomes available.

How are teams created?

Teams are formed by Junior Rangers staff using age, experience, and overall skill level whenever possible. 

Our goal is to create balanced teams that provide every player with a positive experience.

When will I find out my child's team?

Families will receive team assignments during or after the first session.  

Information will include practice schedules, game schedules, jersey color, and coach information when available.

Will my child always play on the same team?

Yes. 

Players remain with the same team throughout the season unless adjustments are necessary to maintain balanced rosters.

Are there playoffs or championships?

No. 

Rookie League focuses on player development rather than league standings or postseason play.

What if my child cannot attend every game?

We understand families have busy schedules. 

Please notify your coach as early as possible if your child will miss a practice or game. 

Unfortunately, make-up sessions are not often available.

What equipment is required?

All participants must provide their own equipment, including: 

  • Helmet with full face cage  

  • Shoulder pads  

  • Elbow pads  

  • Gloves  

  • Hockey pants  

  • Shin guards  

  • Hockey skates  

  • Hockey stick  

  • Hockey socks  

  • Equipment bag  

  • Neck Guard  

We also strongly recommend: 

  • Mouthguard  

  • Athletic supporter (jock or jill)  

An official Junior Rangers jersey is included with your first Rookie League registration of the season.

Does Rookie League include equipment?

No. 

Unlike Learn to Play, Rookie League does not include a complimentary equipment package. 

Players are expected to have their own properly fitted equipment.

What if equipment no longer fits?

Parents are responsible for replacing equipment as their child grows. 

Properly fitted equipment is essential for player safety.

How early should we arrive?

Please arrive at least 20–30 minutes before your scheduled ice time. 

This allows time to: 

  • Check in  

  • Dress  

  • Meet teammates  

  • Warm up  

  • Be ready when practice begins

Where do we check in?

Junior Rangers staff will be available before the first session to assist with check-in and answer questions.

Should skates be sharpened?

Yes. 

Players should have skates professionally sharpened before the season begins and throughout the season as needed. We recommend getting skates sharpened for every 8 hours of use.

What happens during practices?

Practices focus on: 

  • Skating development  

  • Individual skills  

  • Small-area games  

  • Team concepts  

  • Hockey IQ  

  • Fun, age-appropriate drills

What happens during games?

Players will: 

  • Learn game flow  

  • Practice teamwork  

  • Rotate positions when appropriate  

  • Continue developing hockey fundamentals in live game situations  

The emphasis remains on learning and having fun.

How much ice time will my child receive?

Our coaches work to provide every participant with meaningful playing opportunities. 

Equal development is prioritized over winning.

Can parents watch?

Yes. 

Parents and guests are encouraged to watch from designated spectator areas. Parents are not allowed on the bench.

Can parents coach from the stands?

We kindly ask parents to allow coaches to instruct players during practices and games. 

Positive encouragement is always appreciated.

Can I take photos or videos?

Yes. 

Families are welcome to take photos and videos from spectator areas while respecting rink policies.

What happens if we arrive late?

Please check in with your coach upon arrival. 

Your child may join the session once fully dressed and it is safe to enter the ice.

What happens if weather causes a cancellation?

Families will receive email communication as soon as possible if a practice or game must be cancelled due to weather or rink closures. Make ups and/or refund information will also be shared.

Will my child receive coaching during games?

Yes. 

Our coaches provide instruction throughout practices and games to reinforce skills, positioning, and teamwork.

How do I know if my child is progressing?

Our instructors continually observe player development throughout the season. 

If you have questions about your child's progress, please speak with your coach after practice or contact the Junior Rangers team.

What comes after Rookie League?

Depending on your child's age and skill level, the next step may include: 

  • Another Rookie League season  

  • Girls Hockey League  

  • Local recreational youth hockey  

  • Travel hockey associations  

  • Other Junior Rangers development programs

Will Rangers Alumni visit our program?

Select Rookie League locations may feature appearances by Rangers Alumni, broadcasters, or other special guests. 

While we make every effort to include these appearances, they are subject to availability.

Can I volunteer as an on-ice coach?

Experienced hockey coaches interested in volunteering should contact the Junior Rangers staff. All on-ice volunteers must meet USA Hockey requirements, including current SafeSport certification and any applicable background screening.
