Sanheim was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers with the No. 17 pick of the 2014 NHL Draft after he had 29 points (five goals, 24 assists) in 67 games for Calgary of the Western Hockey League. He signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers on Sept. 25, 2014.
Sanheim spent the next two seasons with Calgary, where he had 133 points (30 goals, 103 assists) in 119 games before playing four games with Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League in 2015-16. He played 76 games for Lehigh Valley in 2016-17 and had 37 points (10 goals, 27 assists).

Sanheim made the Flyers out of training camp for the 2017-18 season and scored his first NHL goal Dec. 14, 2017 against the Buffalo Sabres.
After being sent down to Lehigh Valley in January, he was recalled in March and finished with 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 49 games and one goal in four games in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Playing all 82 games in 2018-19, Sanheim scored 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists).
