Laughton was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers with the No. 20 pick of the 2012 NHL Draft after he had 53 points (21 goals, 32 assists) in 64 games for Oshawa of the Ontario Hockey League. He signed an entry-level contract on Aug. 8, 2012.
He began the 2012-13 season with Oshawa before he made his debut for the Flyers in the shortened NHL season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 19, 2013. Laughton didn't have a point in five games with the Flyers and returned to Oshawa for the 2013-14 season, where he had 87 points (40 goals, 47 assists) in 54 games and was an OHL First-Team All-Star.

Laughton split time in 2014-15 between the Flyers and Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League, but played 71 games with Philadelphia in 2015-16, finishing with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists).
After spending most of the 2016-17 season at Lehigh Valley, the Flyers signed Laughton to a two-year contract extension on July 11, 2017. He had 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in 81 games in 2017-18 and 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in 82 games in 2018-19.
On July 12, 2019, the Flyers signed Laughton to a two-year contract extension.
