Lindgren agreed to terms with the Montreal Canadiens on a two-year, two-way contract on March 30, 2016 after he finished his junior season with St. Cloud State University, where he went 30-9-1 with a 2.13 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.
In three seasons at St. Cloud State, Lindgren went 51-29-3 with a 2.21 GAA and .921 save percentage and was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Year and was an NCAA First Team All-American in 2016.

Lindgren made his NHL debut on April 7, 2016, making 26 saves in a 4-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes.
In 2016-17, Lindgren played for St. John's of the American Hockey League and went 24-18-5 with a 2.56 GAA and .914 save percentage. That season he was named to the AHL All-Star Classic. Lindgren also made two starts for the Canadiens and went 2-0-0 with a 1.48 GAA and .949 save percentage.
Lindgren played in a career-high 14 games for Montreal in 2017-18, going 4-8-2 with a 3.03 GAA and .908 save percentage. He recorded his first career shutout on Nov. 5, 2017, making 38 saves in a 2-0 win against the Chicago Blackhawks.
On Feb. 13, 2018, Lindgren signed a three-year contract extension with the Canadiens.
