Forsberg, a native of Harnsand, Sweden, was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round (No. 188) in the 2011 NHL Draft. However, he didn't come to North America until after the completion of the 2013-14 Swedish Hockey League season, going 3-0-0 for Springfield of the American Hockey League.
Forsberg spent most of the 2014-15 season with Springfield, but made his NHL debut on Nov. 1, 2014, against the New Jersey Devils. It was one of five NHL appearances for Forsberg, who was 0-4-0 with a 4.59 goals-against average and .866 save percentage.

The Blue Jackets moved their AHL affiliate to Lake Erie in 2015-16, and Forsberg spent most of the season there, going 23-10-5 with a 2.40 GAA and .914 save percentage. He did go 1-3-0 with Columbus, but was back in the AHL in time to lead Lake Erie to the Calder Cup championship with a 1.34 GAA and .949 save percentage.
However, with Sergei Bobrovsky ensconced as the starter, Forsberg spent all but one game in the AHL during 2016-17, going 27-17-6 with a 2.28 GAA and .926 save percentage. The Blue Jackets traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks on June 23, 2017, and he signed a two-year contract three days later.
Forsberg won the backup job to Corey Crawford during training camp, and in 2017-18 had a 2.97 GAA and .908 save percentage while playing 35 games.
