Rescue of the Week

Every week throughout the season, Coach Tortorella will join Flyers Broadcast Network host Jason Myrtetus for the Hockey & Hounds Podcast, discussing not only Flyers hockey but also his passion for animal welfare. In each episode, Coach Tortorella will feature an adoptable dog available at one of the Flyers’ two partner shelters. These dogs will also be featured throughout the season in Philadelphia Flyers radio game broadcasts and right here on the Hockey & Hounds homepage.

The Tortorellas' foundation, The John and Christine Tortorella Family Foundation for Giving Back, focuses on partnering with organizations that provide for neglected and abused animals. To further support this initiative, the Flyers have partnered with PAWS and PSPCA to feature a rescue animal that is currently up for adoption each week.

Meet Kculli!

Kculli was rescued from the home of a dog fighter in November of 2021. She was rescued alongside 33 other dogs.

The majority of these pups have found homes, but Kculli and three other are still waiting. There is nothing wrong with this sweet girl, despite her horrific past. She is a bit shy at first, but she opens up quickly and just LOVES people. She can live with kids, but we don’t think she should live with other animals.

Featured Rescue Organizations

The Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA)

The Pennsylvania SPCA rescues animals from cruelty and neglect, rehabilitates them medically and behaviorally, and places them with new, loving families. More than 150 years after their founding, the PSPCA is the state's leading animal welfare organization. Headquartered in North Philadelphia, they have two regional locations, the Central PA Center at Danville and the Lancaster Center

Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)

PAWS' mission is to make Philadelphia a no-kill city where every savable pet is guaranteed a home. As the city's largest rescue partner and provider of affordable, basic veterinary care, PAWS saves and finds loving homes for thousands of homeless animals each year, and prevents thousands more from entering shelters in the first place by enabling families to care for and keep their cherished pets.

The John And Christine Tortorella Family Foundation

Four years after coaching the Tampa Bay Lightning and winning the Stanley Cup in 2004, the Tortorella family initiated The John and Christine Tortorella Family Foundation for Giving Back. John and his wife Christine have both made great connections with people and organizations that provide for neglected and abused animals, giving food, shelter, medical/vet care, foster/adoption services, and spay/neutering services. The Tortorella's have always had a great love for animals and fundraising for local shelters is a passion for the whole family. The foundation works to help provide support to some of the animals that fall through the 'cracks' of the system with the Next Step initiative, with The Way Home and Bear's Angels programs.
