Doug Houda

Assistant Coach

Doug Houda joins the Islanders after six seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Detroit Red Wings. Prior to his time in Detroit, Houda worked 10 seasons in the same role with the Boston Bruins, winning the Stanley Cup in 2011. Houda also spent three seasons as an Assistant Coach in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans from 2003-06. 

A native of Blairmore, Alberta, Houda, was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round (28th overall) of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He played defense for two seasons with the Islanders (1996-97 and 1997-98), scoring 13 points (three goals and 10 assists). Houda played 561 NHL games with the Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, Islanders and Anaheim Mighty Ducks between 1985-03, recording 82 points (19-63-82). 

Houda's 17-year playing career, included 553 American Hockey League and International Hockey League games with the Adirondack Red Wings, Rochester Americans and Utah Grizzlies. He scored 238 points (55 goals and 183 assists). He captured a Calder Cup championship during his time in the AHL with Rochester in 1995-96.
