Story of the Day

The Capitals kick off their season-long six-game road trip today against the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena. Today’s game marks the first of two meetings between the teams this season. Washington will complete its season series with Colorado on March 22 at Capital One Arena. The Capitals and Avalanche split their season series 1-1-0 in 2024-25, with the Capitals claiming a 5-2 win in their lone trip to Ball Arena on Nov. 15, 2024. The Capitals have won seven of their last 10 games (7-3-0) at Ball Arena.

John Carlson recorded two assists on Saturday against Florida and enters today’s contest two assists shy of becoming the 21st defenseman in NHL history to reach the 600-assist mark. Of the sixteen Hockey Hall of Fame eligible defensemen who have 600-plus career assists, 15 have been inducted. Carlson’s 106 game-winning assists are already the third most in NHL history among defensemen at the time of their 600th assist. In addition, Carlson’s 307 primary assists are currently the ninth most in League history among blueliners at the time of their 600th assist.

Carlson leads the Capitals and ranks tied for eighth among NHL defensemen in assists this season with 29. Carlson’s 38 points (9g, 29a) in 45 games rank ninth among all blueliners. The 36-year-old, who is Washington’s all-time leader in games played (1,133), goals (165), assists (598) and points (763) among defensemen, has recorded a team-leading nine points (1g, 8a) in seven games since Jan. 5.
