Capitals release Roy, Peters from training camp roster

Veteran center Derek Roy and backup goaltender Justin Peters were among six players released by the Washington Capitals from their training camp roster Monday.

He had 12 goals and 32 points in 72 games last season for the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, and was an intriguing possibility to make the Capitals with center Nicklas Backstrom missing the start of the season recovering from offseason hip surgery.

Peters, 29, went 3-6-1 with a 3.25 goals-against average and .881 save percentage in 12 games last season as the backup to Braden Holtby, but was pushed for the job by Philipp Grubauer, who wound up starting Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the New York Islanders when Holtby was ill.
