Flyers place defenseman MacDonald on waivers

The Philadelphia Flyers placed defenseman Andrew MacDonald on waivers Monday, the Flyers announced.

MacDonald, who signed a six-year contract with the Flyers on April 15, 2014, had two goals and 12 points in 58 games last season. He is owed $23.75 million on the remaining five years of the contract, according to war-on-ice.com.

The Flyers, who open the regular season Thursday at the Tampa Bay Lightning, brought eight defensemen on one-way contracts to training camp.

"It was a tough decision," Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said in video posted on the team website. "He's an NHL player but we're in a jam here with a roster spot and the cap issue and we've also got to put our best team on the ice Thursday night."

Hextall said the intent if MacDonald clears waivers is to send him to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League. The 29-year-old was acquired from the New York Islanders prior to the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline for forward Matt Mangene and two draft picks.

MacDonald has 19 goals and 105 points in 372 games over seven NHL seasons with the Islanders and Flyers.
