The Maple Leafs selected Nylander with the eighth pick of the 2014 NHL Draft. Kapanen, chosen 22nd by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2014, was acquired by Toronto in the package that sent forward Phil Kessel to Pittsburgh on July 1.
"There's an extreme bright future for them, but this is the right decision right now to make sure that we see exactly what we have here, that is of the veterans and what they bring," Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello told the Canadian Press. "At this time, the right thing is for them to go and be the best possible players they can be."
Toronto's roster is at 24 players.
