Forward Steven Stamkos and goaltender Ben Bishop each was a full participant Friday in the first on-ice session of Tampa Bay Lightning training camp.

Stamkos (leg) and Bishop (wrist, elbow) each are recovered from injuries sustained last season.

“It's fun to get your competitive juices going again and going against the guys full speed," said Bishop, who had offseason surgery. "So, that was fun. It felt good out there. I didn't get tired. I felt like I was in pretty good shape, so I was happy about that."

"But we're working and we're right on track with where we thought it'd be at this point," said Quick, who is three days past 12 weeks from the surgery, which was said to require a recovery period of 10-12 weeks.

Summer was too long for the Boston Bruins, who were eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last spring.

After four months of rest and training, they hit the ice Friday at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, Mass., for the first practices of training camp determined to make next summer a lot shorter.

Coach Claude Julien ran four hours of on-ice sessions and was happy with what he saw.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will be back at left wing to start the 2014-15 season.

That's the decision new Capitals coach Barry Trotz made Friday.

"He's better on the right side a little bit defensively, but his talent is on the left side," Trotz told the Capitals website. "And so if I'm going to maximize his talent, I need to get him on the left side. Now if he doesn't want to adjust defensively playing the left side, then we'll talk about maybe moving him back to the right.

"The stuff that he does on the left side, there's no coach on the planet who can teach [it]. If he's willing to learn, I can teach him the other stuff."

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty isn't scheduled to participate in training camp activities Friday because of an upper-body injury that occurred during training, the team announced via Twitter.

Kings assistant general manager Rob Blake said in an email that Doughty is day-to-day, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Kings also announced forward Jarret Stoll was not expected to skate as he rehabilitates from offseason hip surgery, but media on hand reported Stoll was on the ice Friday, skating between Kyle Clifford and Trevor Lewis.

It didn't take long for the Carolina Hurricanes to notice a distinct change to the way training camp had been run for the past few seasons.

New coach Bill Peters and his staff put the players through up-tempo drills for about an hour, spent time on power-play breakouts and positioning, and also had a 30-minute scrimmage Friday.

By all indications, Leon Draisaitl's bid to make the Edmonton Oilers got off to a good start Friday.

Draisaitl, who made history in June as the highest-drafted German-born player when the Oilers selected him with the third pick, skated on a line with David Perron and Benoit Pouliot.

After the scrimmage, coach Dallas Eakins had praise for the way Draisaitl looked.

"We know he's going to be an Oiler," Eakins said. "Whether that's this year, we're not sure, but he had a good showing today."

The Vancouver Canucks signed Radim Vrbata this offseason with the intent of playing him alongside Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin.

On Friday, it was time to start building chemistry.

"By the end hopefully we're on the same page, but you could see that if you get open for them and get a little space, they'll find you, so that will be my job to find open ice and be ready for passes," Vrbata said after the Canucks practiced for a little over an hour.

For the first time in about 10 years, there's an open competition for the starting goalie spot with the Buffalo Sabres.

Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth began training camp on equal footing, and training camp will determine who gets the most playing time.

After sitting out last season, Simon Gagne is happy to have another chance at playing in the NHL. The veteran forward is in training camp with the Boston Bruins on a tryout contract.

"I was pretty happy that Boston called," Gagne, 34, told CSNNE.com Thursday. "I was looking for a team like them that wanted to go back and win a [Stanley] Cup, and a team that made sense with some open spots. They're going to give me my chance. I think not playing last year really makes me energized, and now I really want to play again."

In 13 NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings, Gagne has 287 goals and 597 points in 799 regular-season games. He's scored at least 20 goals seven times, and was part of the Kings team that won the Stanley Cup in 2012.
