Bruins send first-round pick Pastrnak to AHL

The Boston Bruins sent forward David Pastrnak to Providence of the American Hockey League, general manager Peter Chiarelli told the Bruins website Tuesday.

Pastrnak, the No. 25 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, appeared in two preseason games after recovering from a shoulder injury sustained on the second day of training camp. He assisted on Daniel Paille's goal Friday in the Bruins' 6-1 win against the New York Islanders at Bridgeport, Conn.

Bruins' Krejci placed on injured reserve

Boston Bruins center David Krejci was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

Krejci sustained what coach Claude Julien called a "minor issue" during the Bruins' preseason game Saturday. He did not practice Tuesday.

"It's still very minor but it hasn't healed as quickly as we would have liked," Julien said earlier Tuesday according to CSNNE.com.

Krejci led the Bruins in scoring last season with 69 points in 80 games.

Flames forward Bennett out with shoulder injury

CALGARY -- Sam Bennett's bid to make the Calgary Flames as an 18-year-old came up short because of a shoulder injury.

Bennett, the fourth pick of the 2014 NHL Draft and No. 8 on the NHL.com Top 60 prospect ranking, was trying to play through pain in an attempt to be in uniform for the season opener against the Vancouver Canucks at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET, SN). Bennett was placed on the injured/non-roster list to start the season.

"I guess, really, I wanted to play and I'd do anything to make the team and to play in the NHL this year," Bennett said. "I guess maybe I should've come up sooner but I didn't think it was that big of deal. I guess it is a bit bigger of a deal than I thought."

Penguins' Malkin could play in opener

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin practiced Tuesday for the first time since the Stanley Cup Playoffs and said there's a "50/50" chance he could play in the season opener Thursday against the Anaheim Ducks. .

Malkin had not skated with the team due to an undisclosed injury sustained during his offseason workouts. With forward Chris Kunitz absent, Malkin skated on Sidney Crosby's left wing with Patric Hornqvist at right wing during line drills.

Kunitz was held out of practice due to an illness that Penguins coach Mike Johnston said he does not expect to linger. Forward Kasperi Kapanen, who also missed practice, returned to Finland to spend time with his family while the Penguins make a decision on their young players, Johnston said.

Blue Jackets center Dubinsky out indefinitely

Columbus Blue Jackets center Brandon Dubinsky was placed on injured reserve Tuesday and is out indefinitely because of a lower-body injury.

Dubinsky was third on the Blue Jackets last season with 50 points, and his 34 assists were a career-best. Dubinsky also was tied for second on the team in scoring during the Stanley Cup Playoffs with six points in six games.

The injury to Dubinsky means the Blue Jackets will be missing three of their top forwards for the season opener Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres. Also missing from the lineup will be Boone Jenner (hand) and Nathan Horton (back). In addition, top-line center Ryan Johansen, who signed a three-year contract Monday, is questionable for Thursday; Johansen has to take his physical and clear immigration, and Richards said he wants to assess Johansen's conditioning before committing to playing him.

Devils center Zajac 'fine' after lower-body injury

New Jersey Devils center Travis Zajac left practice Tuesday with a lower-body injury, but general manager Lou Lamoriello told NorthJersey.com it's "nothing serious."

"He'll be fine," Lamoriello said.

Zajac, third on the Devils last season with 48 points, has been skating on the top line with Mike Cammalleri and Jaromir Jagr. Scott Gomez, unsigned but practicing with the Devils, took Zajac's place.

Roster update: Nylander among Maple Leafs cuts

William Nylander, the Toronto Maple Leafs' first pick (No. 8) at the 2014 NHL Draft, was one of four players cut from the Maple Leafs roster Monday.

Nylander, No. 15 on NHL.com's ranking of the Top 60 prospects in the League, can be returned to Modo in the Swedish Hockey League, or could play for the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League. The Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League own his Canadian Hockey League rights, but prior to the draft Nylander said he would return to Sweden rather than play junior hockey.

The Maple Leafs also placed forwards Frazer McLaren and Colton Orr, and defenseman Korbinian Holzer, on waivers with the purpose of assigning them to the American Hockey League.

Flyers' Simmonds returns to practice: report

Philadelphia Flyers right wing Wayne Simmonds returned to practice Monday in Orleans, Mass.

The Flyers have been spending time in the town near Cape Cod prior to opening the regular season Oct. 8 at the Boston Bruins.

"Just in case I am able to go Wednesday, you want to get today in," Simmonds, who went through about 75 minutes of practice, told CSNPhilly.com. "Get that hard skate out of the way, then go Tuesday which obviously won’t be as hard for me. Especially, at the end, I doubt I’ll get bagged, especially, if I am in the lineup … I thought it was important to get on the ice today.

Sabres' Sam Reinhart to play in season opener

Buffalo Sabres center Sam Reinhart, No. 4 on the NHL.com Top 60 prospect ranking, will remain with the Sabres for their season opener Thursday against the Columbus Blue Jackets at First Niagara Center.

Sabres coach Ted Nolan made the announcement after practice Monday.

"I can't predict how long [Reinhart] will be with us, but in training camp you just want to make sure you're doing the right thing with young players for their development," Nolan said. "We're also evaluating Nikita [Zadorov]. He's physically big enough and needs to work on parts of his game; we'll evaluate that decision."

Reinhart was chosen No. 2 by the Sabres in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Burakovsky likely to stay with Capitals: report

Washington Capitals prospect Andre Burakovsky has impressed enough in camp that he is likely to make the NHL roster, CSNWashington.com reported Sunday.

The 19-year-old spent the majority of his junior career playing on the wing, but has performed well as Washington's No. 2 center behind Nicklas Backstrom with two goals and two assists in six preseason games.
